There are two basslines on this song.
The most prominent (top half of the notation) is played by
session musician Larry Knechtel on an electric bass guitar with
a pick, and the other (bottom half of the notation) is played by
Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek on a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass. For
the best effect, play his line with your fingers. You can transpose
the strings however you like, as his bassline is not originally
written for the bass guitar. This is just the way I prefer to play
it and think sounds best. The same goes for Knechtel's part, as you
may opt to tighten/loosen it up from my notation. I play it pretty
close to the open frets because it's got a very deep and percussive
tone to it.
Listen to the recording to pick up on the exact timbre of the notes.
This is the whole song from beginning to end.
Both parts are at least 99% accurate, but the recording is 4-track
and the bass was not recorded that well so some of the notes were not
discernable, and are more the product of educated guesses.
In particular, note that the second measure of Knechtel's playing seems
dissonant, and it is. That's just how he played it, but only in the
beginning, as I think he realized quickly that he needed to do something
else. Still, it's rather difficult to distinguish every note, especially
as producer Paul Rothchild had the band stomp around on a wooden platform
for the distinctive percussive effect on the song, which masks some of
the bass guitar.
